Homework

If students are to take full advantage of their secondary schooling it is important that they do some regular work outside school hours to reinforce and develop what they have done in lessons.

.Monitoring Homework

Students are given a Homework Timetable at the beginning of each year so that they know when work for each subject will be set.

Students should record details of the homework set in their diary.

.Concerns

You can download a copy your child's Homework Timetable to help you keep track of what homework should be being set. Check your child's diary to see what homework is being set.

If you are worried about homework or have any queries, the first thing to do is to contact your child's tutor or subject teacher. The Head of Year or Head of Department will help if you need more information.

We know that homework forms an important link between school and home and we want to make that link as useful as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes it's difficult to feel confident about helping your child with homework - especially with subjects that you've never studied - but don't worry, you're not alone. Here are answers to some questions we're often asked:

Question

Answer

What homework does my son or daughter have on which days

In the front of your child's diary there is a small chart which should indicate what homework s/he should receive each evening.

If it isn't filled in tell your child you expect to see it the next day

How do I know what homework has actually been set

Your child should write it in her /his diary each day and you can check it when you sign the diary each week

How much homework should s/he be doing

Year 7 - 8 one and a half hours on average per night

Year 9 one and a half to two hours per night

Year 10 - 11 two hours per night

What type of things will my child be asked to do for homework

The curriculum booklet you received at the start of the year outlines the type of things each subject area may set for homework. If you've lost it you can ask for a new one.

What if the work is too easy or too difficult for my child

Contact the subject teacher by phone or letter and discuss it with them directly. You can follow up issues further with Heads of Department if you still require further clarification. Again their names are in your curriculum handbooks.

What do I do if I think my child is being given too much homework

Contact the form tutor to discuss a way forward

What if my child is not being given enough homework from a subject or a number of subjects

Individual subject - contact the Head of Department

A number of subjects - contact the Head of Year

What can I do to help my child

Find them a place to work, ask if you can help them e.g. asking questions when they have revised something, taking an active interest

I've tried several of the above and am still struggling to solve the homework problem(s)

Contact head of year who will be happy discuss the situation in more detail and try to find a solution.
